Πίνων μὴ πολλὰ λαλεῖν, ἁμαρτήσεις γὰρ.
Inter pocula ne multum loquere, delinques enim.
Μὴ κακολόγει τοὺς πλησίους, εἰ δὲ μὴ ἀκούσῃ, ἐφ᾿ οἷς λυπηθήσῃ, Ne sis maledicus in proximos, sin minus audies, quae tibi molesta erunt. Ε´πὶ τὰ δεῖπνα τῶ φίλων βραδέως πορεύου, ἐπὶ ἀτυχίας τα χέως. Ad conviviae amicorum tardus eas, ad calamitates autem cito.

Tria eius, quae difficilia dixit esse, commemorat Laertius, l. 1. c. 69. primum quidem ἀπό ῥῥητα σιωπῆσαι, arcana retinere, alterum χολην` εὖ διαθέςθαι, otium recte disponere, tertium ἀδικούμενον δύναςθαι φέρειν, iniurias tolerare posse. Nomen accepisse videtur ἀπὸ τῶ χειλέων, ut Labiones, et Labieni, apud Romanos, a labris, et labiis. Lucretius, l. 4. v. 1162. nominat Labtofos.
